Looking Good Whilst Pregnant
16 Aug 2010

Walk down any typical British high street and you will probably notice a large number of women carrying a big (lump) bump on their front or pushing a child in a pushchair. According to the Office of National Statistics, the total fertility rate has increased quite significantly over the past decade.

In 1999, the rate was 1.70. It then dipped to 1.63 in 2001 but in 2009 it was up to 1.96. Women are having children later too. On average, in 1999 women were 28.4 years when they gave birth, by 2009 this had risen to 29.4 years. It seems that most babies are born in the summer too, sometime between May and September. This could largely be linked to the fact that this is when most people get married so it’s no surprise that nine to 12 months later a baby pops out.

Another point to notice is that mums to be today are much more stylish than mums to be of yesteryear. Thankfully, high street shops are now offering affordable, comfortable, practical and stylish maternity wear. Fashion stores are managing to combine the latest catwalk trends with stretching designs that can even last the whole term. Fashion doesn’t have to be compromised for comfort, but likewise comfort is still the most important design consideration.

So what is hot to trot right now? Tailoring, following the 1940s and 1950s theme, is going to be one of the hottest trends this autumn and winter. This may sound scary to pregnant women, but it shouldn’t be. Tailoring is unbelievably flattering – on any shape – and trousers and jackets can be styled around the bump, so not to hide it, but in fact, to show it off.

Following on from this city-sharp chic theme, the mac is back. This oozes sophistication, even if you are pregnant and don’t feel too sophisticated with swollen feet and ‘waddling’. (a bent back). Look out for empire-line designs that are more flattering and give plenty of room for that bump to grow.

Dresses are still flooding the catwalks around the globe. They are ultra-flattering for women with swollen bellies. Ties, belts and bows just under the bust hide all your sins but also show off your blossoming tummy.

And, the best news is that leggings and tracksuit bottoms – a pregnant woman’s best friends – are actually really fashionable this season. Team them with smock or tunic tops or shirts and ballet pumps. Who said being pregnant couldn’t be fashionable?

New Look has one of the best selections of maternity clothes on the high street that are on-trend and on-budget.
