AA: Hepatitis test

AFP: Alpha - Feto Protein

Alb: Albumin (a protein found in urine)

B

BP: Blood Pressure Br: Breech (baby is lying bottom downwards)

C

C/Ceph: Cephalic (baby is lying head down)

CS/LSCS: Caesarean Section or Lower Segment Caesarean Section

Cx: cervix (neck of the womb)

D

Date: Date of antenatal visit

E

EDD/EDC: Estimated Date of Delivery or Estimated Date of Confinement

Eng/E: Engaged (baby's head has dropped into the pelvis)

F

Fe: Symbol for iron and means that iron has been prescribed

FHH: Fetal Heart Heard

FHNH: Fetal Heart Not Heard

FMF: Fetal Movement Felt

H

Hb: Haemoglobin

Height of Fundus: Refers to the height of the top of the womb and gives an idea of the pregnancy stage. It should be similar to the number of weeks that you are pregnant.

HT: HyperTension (same as blood pressure)

L

LMP: Last Menstrual Period

Long: Longitudinal lie (baby is lying parallel to your spine)

M

MSU: Midstream Sample of Urine

Multigravida: A woman who has been pregnant before

N

NAD: Nothing Abnormal Detected (usually used for urine readings)

NE: Not Engaged

O

Oed/Oedema: Another name for swelling

P

Para 0: Woman has no other children

Para 1 (etc): Woman has one other child

PET: Pre-Eclamptic Toxaemia

PP: Presenting Part (the part of the baby that is lying lowest)

Presentation: The way in which the baby is lying

Primagravida: A woman who is in her first pregnancy

R

Relation of PP to Brim: Doctors and midwives divide the baby's head into 'fifths' and describe how far the head has moved into the pelvis by judging how may 'fifths' of the head they can feel above the bone at the front (or the brim). A figure of 2/5 means that the head is engaged and only two-fifths of it can be felt above the brim

S

SFD: Small For Dates

SFH: Symphysis Fundal Height (measurement of the length of the womb in centimetres)

T

TCA: To Come Again TCI: To Come Into hospital Tr: Transverse (baby is lying across your abdomen) Tr or + (in urine results): A trace found

U

U/S: UltraSound

V

VE: Vaginal Examination Vx: Vertex (baby is lying head down)

W

Weeks: Length of pregnancy in weeks from the date of your last menstrual period

WR/KAHN: Tests for syphilis
